Geng Shuang retorts to foreign media reporter: How the common will of 1.4 billion Chinese people can be manipulated
On August 22, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang answered reporters' questions.
Q: Some Western government officials told the media that the anti-Hong Kong demonstrations held by supporters in the UK, Australia and other places were organized by Chinese agencies abroad. What is your response to this?
Answer: I think everyone must have noticed that in some foreign cities recently, some overseas Chinese and students have indeed taken to the streets to express their wishes and demands to support the reunification of the motherland and to maintain the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.
First, they express indignation and opposition to words and deeds that attempt to split the country and smear China's image. This is completely natural and reasonable.
Second, we hope that overseas Chinese citizens can express their patriotic enthusiasm rationally and pay attention to protecting their own safety.
Third, the Chinese government has always required overseas Chinese citizens to abide by local laws and regulations. At the same time, we also hope that relevant countries can respect and understand the legitimate activities of overseas Chinese citizens and ensure and safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.
In addition, you said that these activities seem to be organized by Chinese agencies abroad. I can tell you clearly that the current biggest demand of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, for the situation in Hong Kong is to stop chaos and violence and restore order. Their biggest expectation is to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. This is the common will of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. Do you think the will of 1.4 billion people can be organized and controlled?
