At present, OLED screens are widely used in smartphones, but the current OLED panels are generally small in size and are not suitable for large-screen devices. The main reason is that large-size OLED panels are difficult to manufacture and the cost is high.

A few days ago, AUO announced the launch of a 17.3-inch OLED panel with 4K resolution and 120Hz ultra-high refresh rate. It has 255ppi sub-pixel resolution and also supports high color gamut, high contrast, high brightness and other advantages.

The main feature of this OELD screen is that it does not use the evaporation process commonly used in mobile phone OLED panels. Instead, it uses an inkjet printing process, which significantly reduces manufacturing costs.

Compared with the RGB evaporation process, the inkjet printing process can also be used in smaller-scale production lines and provides similar cost reductions, and is mainly suitable for the production of large and medium-sized panels. IHS estimates that the current production cost of a 65-inch 4K OLED TV is about US$585 (OLED produced by LGD's 10G production line); but if the inkjet printing process is used, the overall cost will drop to US$441 (a cost reduction of nearly 25%.)

Currently AUO has not announced the launch time of this 17.3-inch OLE panel. This size should be suitable for high-end notebooks. It is not yet known which notebook manufacturer will be the first to use this OLED panel.
